About this Event

To look deep into the history of one's family is a need that arises in moments of life when we are trying to comprehend our identity and expand our understanding of ourselves. It is important for us to see the connections between historical events and how they influenced the life of the family, the decisions that were made by our ancestors, and intra-family relations. It is especially touching to feel the connection of one’s birth with a pattern of relationships that builds up through the years.

Many of us have the experience of building a family tree, which in itself is a meaningful experience. During the workshop, we will go deeper into the study of family history using the genogram method. We will learn not only about our ancestors, but also about relationships, experiences, and significant events in their lives.

The genogram method allows one to see the family history holistically, compare the dates of key family events, explore the losses and difficult events experienced by the family, build a sociogram of the relationship between a family member.

During the workshop, we will briefly get acquainted with the methods of studying family history in psychotherapy, the mechanisms of transferring family patterns between generations, symbols and principles of building a genogram, how we move from the analysis of “objective” data to the “social construction of reality”. We will analyze the main concepts that attract the attention of family psychotherapists: invisible loyalty, family triangles, the Zeigarnik effect, anniversary syndrome, replacement child, perentification, repeating patterns in several generations. The practical part will include exercises from one's own family history and case studies.
