On Saturday, January 16, 2027, The Gathering and Anneke van Giersbergen will conclude the anniversary tour celebrating ‘Mandylion’ with a one-off, exclusive show at AFAS Live in Amsterdam. Following 29 shows around the world, the band will reunite the original line-up one final time for an extended evening dedicated to ‘Mandylion’ and ‘Nighttime Birds’: two inextricably linked albums that left a lasting mark on international symphonic, progressive and atmospheric metal.
During this final concert, ‘Nighttime Birds’ will also be given a special place in the setlist, in the very year the album celebrates its 30th anniversary. It will be a long show featuring songs that The Gathering have not performed live for many years, making the evening a unique conclusion to this remarkable chapter in the band’s history.
With ‘Mandylion’, The Gathering began a new chapter in 1995. The arrival of Anneke van Giersbergen gave the band an instantly recognisable signature: heavy riffs, expansive keyboards and a voice that cut through the music with both power and clarity. Songs including ‘Strange Machines’, ‘Leaves’ and ‘In Motion #1’ became classics, establishing the album as a milestone within the genre.
Two years later, ‘Nighttime Birds’ followed, continuing the musical journey that had begun with ‘Mandylion’. The album was more varied, spacious and cinematic, with tracks such as ‘On Most Surfaces’, ‘The May Song’ and ‘Nighttime Birds’ among its highlights. Together, the two albums represent an important chapter in the band’s creative development: melancholic, heavy, dreamlike and progressive all at once.
On January 16, 2027, The Gathering will bring these two iconic albums to AFAS Live for a unique evening celebrating both the music and the shared journey that the band and its audience have experienced together for more than thirty years.
