This talk focuses on Syrian women refugees, scattered in countries around Syria as well as in Europe. Women’s voices have historically been silenced in Syria and other parts of the Middle East. They need to be heard. Their memories need to be saved from oblivion, as women hold our society together, and memory is the fabric with which the future is made. The speaker explains how recording memory is an act of resistance. Through it, we will be able to deconstruct this war and identify the true sources of what we need to call “evil”. For this talk, the speaker relies on the research conducted for 19 Women: Tales of Resistance, and also the research she is currently conducting for her next book, as well as on her experience with the NGO Women Now, which she has created in 2012.
The talk will be in Arabic, and simultaneous English Interpretation will be provided.
Speaker
Samar Yazbek, Syrian Journalist, Author of "The Crossing: My Journey to the Shattered Heart of Syria" (Ebury Press, 2016)
