LOOKING TO CAST
PIPER: Middle aged man, maybe gaunt from living in the tunnels his whole life. Every movement and word is thought out, nothing left to chance. Even though his life in the tunnels has left him anti-social, and he is considered a “monster” by the Townies, he moves with an unsettling grace, which makes his threatening presence even more alarming.
FORTUNE TELLER: Older woman. Tends to be defensive, definitely not afraid to stand up for herself. She knows she has no true “gifts”, but dares anyone to question her mystical abilities. She moves with practical determination to get from point A to point B.
ROSE/ROOSEVELT: Early to mid- thirties, non-binary (she/he/they). Has seen a lot and has learned to navigate dicey situations. Not presenting as a flamboyant drag queen, but is more comfortable in women’s attire. Has an opinion and is willing to state it without sugar coating it.
JULIE: Late twenties to early thirties female. Walks with a slight limp, which she tries to hide. Life-long resident of Hamlin Heights. Thought of as arrogant by the other Townies because she teaches school, and therefore must think she’s somewhat
“better” than the rest of them. She looks on Harold like an irritating younger brother, but he’s also her only real friend. She comes to think of Piper as a kindred spirit – another “other” of Hamlin Heights.
HAROLD: Late twenties to early thirties male. An “innocent” – naïve. Mistakenly thinks he is accepted by the Townies, which he is not. Tries too hard to impress. Doesn’t know why, but feels like there’s something missing, but he doesn’t know what.
SEYMORE: Child – male 7 to 10 years old. Blind. Tries to present as hard, but underneath is a desperate need to be accepted, to belong. Allows the other kids to take advantage of him, just to be included.
JUMP ROPE KIDS: Basically Townies in training. Cruel to Seymore
because he’s “not like them”.
JENNY, female 7 to 10 years old
AGATHA, female 7 to 10 years old
DAN, male 7 to 10 years old
FRANK, male 7 to 10 years old
B-RATZ: Male and/or female. Late teens to early twenties. Have slowly taken over Hamlin Heights until they are now basically in charge. None of the Townies want to confront them. Although they may not be present all the time, their presence is felt. Lurking. [Looking to cast at least 3 for these roles]
FREHN (Townie) : Female in her fifties. Wife of the Vicar. Very prim and self righteous. Feels everyone, except herself of course, is lacking and guilty of “something”, even if she can’t say what it is.
DUCKIE: Un-official “Mayor” of Hamlin Heights. Very self-important. Considers himself to be the “Old-Towniest” of all the Old Towners. Does not like change, especially if it involves him. Although if it is he who exacts the change, that’s alright.
BERT: Duckie’s shadow. Where ever Duckie is, Bert is close behind. The ultimate yes man. Duckie and Bert basically move as a single unit most of the time.
SPAIRGUS: Is content with being one of the “Old TOWNERS”. Wants to have his say, but is satisfied with just having said it. No follow through. Goes with the flow.
There are few to no ensemble roles.
