About this Event
Dope Black Queers is an space for and by the Black LGBTQIA+ community, to provide grounding, connection, and to feel seen & heard.
The Forum follows a Town Hall Meeting format, less like a panel, but more of an open floor discussion.
This is an event where we can really talk about the things that matter to us, to raise questions and find answers both for ourselves and for others.
Our specific life experiences give each of us different perspectives, and that is what we want everyone to come and share, because it is in the specifics that we can relate and build community.
Whilst participation is encouraged, no one has to share if they don't want to.
But the more interaction, the more there is to learn.
Come meet new people, build a community, and share your perspective. This month’s topic is The Patriarch & Me.
Join us for this month's installment of The Forum where we’ll be talking about all things father figures and the patriarch. Whether it’s dad, papa, uncle or controversially daddy, we’re discussing patriarchs in all their iterations.
We couldn’t do a forum on matriarch without doing one of patriarchy. What some may call to halves of the same hierarchy. We’re gather around to have conversations around patriarchal figures; fathers of presence and fathers of absence. Grandfathers and uncles. Elders who’ve guided us. Friends who’ve stepped into roles of protection, care, or mentorship when we needed it most. And the fathers of movements, those who built organisations, led struggles, or shaped communities that created space for our survival and expression.
We’ll explore how these relationships have supported and failed us. How ideas of masculinity, authority, and protection have shown up in our lives. How these dynamics have shifted over time, and how they’ve shaped who we are, how we move through the world, and the ways we relate to power, care, and each other.
We hope this to be a space of nuance, reflection, and a wide range of experiences, a space that can honour guidance and presence while also naming absence, pressure, and harm.
A space where we can hold the complexity of fathers, patriarchy, and the multitude of ways this shows up in our lives.
Come ready to listen, reflect, and be heard. As we hold each other with respect, curiosity, and care!
