The Fabric of the Frontier: Exploring the Geology of Hadrian's Wall, with Ian Kille, Community Geologist
About the talk
The history of Hadrian’s Wall and its construction is well-researched. However, the relationship of the Wall to the landscape into which it was built, and from which it was constructed leaves unanswered questions. The main groups of rocks, from Carboniferous to Triassic, which formed the landscape of the Wall are well known. The exact materials used to build the Wall are less well characterised and the relationship between the Wall stones and their source is only partially understood. This talk will explore the Wall’s landscape characterising the Wall’s geodiversity including the post-Roman buildings where significant amounts of Wall stone now reside.
About the Speaker
Ian worked as the Community Geologist for WallCAP, leading activities investigating Stone sourcing and dispersal. Ian trained as a research geologist at Oxford and Imperial College. Moving to Northumberland in 2006 he set up Northumbrian Earth to explore the geology of Northumberland and the Borders. He has been actively involved with geological work, running walks, talks and community training with groups including Northumberland Coast AONB, Northumberland National Park and local groups such as OUGS, NEGS and EGS. He is co-author of books on the coastal geology of Northumberland and Berwickshire.
