The Extractive Paradox of the Green Transition

The Institute for Environment, Conservation and Sustainability (IECS) and the SDGs@UofT are pleased to present a lecture by visiting scholar Araceli Clavijo.

The global energy transition is often presented as a move away from extractive economies. However, growing demand for lithium and other critical minerals has created new extractive frontiers across resource-rich regions.

Drawing on research in the Argentine Puna, this presentation examines how global decarbonization agendas intersect with territorial realities, environmental conflicts, and competing forms of knowledge. The talk explores questions of water governance, environmental justice, and the challenges of advancing a more equitable energy transition.
