The Effect is Lucy Prebble’s modern classic. Following Tristan and Connie, two young participants on a trial for a new antidepressant, as they meet and begin to unpick their feelings for one another, overseen by Dr James and Dr Sealey. Asking questions about love, reality, emotions and truth, it’s an experimental, incisive and bold interrogation of what we feel and how we feel it. Northern Assignment’s new touring production takes this clinical setting and pushes it to the forefront. It intends to bring new light into the text, and ask, in an environment where emotions, attitudes and feelings can be chemically manufactured, how can we rely on our senses for what we’re experiencing? Can you trust your heart?
