An aristocratic woman known only as “Madame de . . .” (Darrieux) sells a pair of earrings given to her by her husband (Boyer) as a wedding gift. As the earrings pass hands, the unintended consequences lead to a domino effect of tragedy. Ophüls’s opening shot (one of many long uncut takes in the film) is one of the most understated but elegant long takes ever put to celluloid.
