About this Event

A focused education day to provide family physicians, internists, and pharmacists with practical teaching on topics in clinical pharmacology and toxicology.

Staff Physicians: $110

Residents/Fellows/Students: $60

This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by Continuing Professional Development, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto for up to 3.5 Mainpro+® credits.

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by Continuing Professional Development, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. You may claim up to a maximum of 3.5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).

1. Key Drug-Drug Interactions To Know and Avoid
Host: Dr. Peter Wu

Info: Dr. Peter Wu is an Internist and Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology consultant
at the University Health Network where he also serves as the Medical Director
of Quality & Safety. He is an Associate Professor and the Division Director for
Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology in the Department of Medicine at the
University of Toronto. His scholarly work focuses on optimal models of
education and improving the quality of patient care, with a specific interest in
safe Medic*tion practices and of adverse drug reactions and interactions.

2. Real World Approach to NSAID Allergies
Host: Dr. Christine Song

Info: Dr. Song is a Clinical Immunologist and Allergist, previously based at St Michael’s Hospital. As Assistant Professor and Clinician Teacher, she serves as the Residency Program Director for the Adult Allergy and Immunology program and also teaches Immunology for the MD Program at Temerty Faculty of Medicine. Her clinical area of expertise is drug hypersensitivity and she’s thrilled to now be a full time member of Sunnybrook’s Drug Allergy Clinic team.

3. Not a Class Act: When Similar Drugs Have Different Risks
Host: Dr. David Juurlink

Info: David Juurlink is a general internist and Head of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is also a medical toxicologist at the Ontario Poison Centre and a Senior Scientist at ICES, where he maintains an active research program in the field of drug safety. He previously practiced for five years as a community pharmacist.

4. Script Happens: Managing Complex Polypharmacy
Host: Dr. Carolyn Tan

Info: Carolyn Tan is a geriatrician and clinical pharmacologist/toxicologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and GeriMedRisk. She completed her residency training at the University of Toronto along with a Master's in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at IHPME. Her interests include reducing Medic*tion-related morbidity and mortality in older adults.

5. Tailoring Drug Treatment: A Beginner's Guide to Pharmacogenetics
Host: Dr. Ruud Verstegen

Info: Dr. Ruud Verstegen is a paediatric rheumatologist and clinical pharmacologist at The Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto. His main interests include improving the efficacy and safety of immunosuppressive medications in children and optimizing the care for immune-mediated adverse drug reactions. He is actively involved in the clinical implementation of pharmacogenetic testing at The Hospital for Sick Children using informatics tools. Additionally, he contributes to provincial efforts to enhance access to pharmacogenetic testing for all residents of Ontario.

6. Review of SGLT2 Inhibitors - Indications and Adverse Effects
Host: Derek Leong

Info: Derek graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Ph*rm*cy in 2004, and subsequently completed his general Ph*rm*cy residency at William Osler Health Centre. Since completing residency, Derek has worked at Toronto General Hospital, primarily in the area of General Internal Medicine. His research and teaching interests include cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and clinical pharmacology. Outside of patient care and preparing for today's talk, Derek spends most of his time maintaining the contentment and containment of his 2 young children, with the hope of preventing mass destruction on a global scale.

7. Micro to Macro: Practical Approaches to Suboxone Initiation
Host: Dr. Jessica Kent-Rice

Info: Jess Kent-Rice is a medical toxicologist at the Ontario Poison Centre and an emergency physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. She is also an Investigating Coroner for Ontario’s Central West Region and an Adjunct Assistant Professor – Clinician Investigator in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Her clinical and academic work focuses on the intersection of toxicology, emergency medicine, and death investigation, with a research interest in preventable drug-related death.
