About this Event

If you’ve been saying you want to write a book… this is where it actually starts.

The The Draft Room Writer's Workshop Series, by BOOKED. in partnership with Johnson C. Smith University Library, is a curated, in-person experience designed to take you from idea to execution with real guidance from authors and industry professionals.

This isn’t just a workshop… it’s access

What You’ll Experience

Session 1: Getting Started (with Mel Dau) | May 23, 2026

Everybody says they want to write a book… but this is where it actually begins.

In this session, you’ll learn what it really takes to go from idea to execution. Get clarity on your message, define your direction, and understand the full writing process from start to finish. Hear directly from Mel Dau (published author), Tierany R. Griffin-Purdie (Story + Idea Alchemist), and Alyssa Pressler (bookstore owner) on how to turn your idea into a solid plan you can confidently move forward with.

Session 2: Writing & Finishing Your Book (with Natisha Raynor) | June 13, 2026

Starting is one thing… finishing is another.

In this session, you’ll learn how to build a writing routine, stay consistent, and push past the blocks that keep most people from completing their book. Hear directly from a Natisha Raynor (fiction author), Latisha Washington (nonfiction author), and Tierany R. Griffin-Purdie (Story + Idea Alchemist) on what it really takes to go from draft to done.

Session 3: Editing & Publishing (with Tia Love) | June 20, 2026

Writing the book is only part of the process… this is where you refine it and get it ready for the world.

In this session, you’ll learn how to properly edit your manuscript and explore your publishing options, whether you’re considering self-publishing or going the traditional route. Hear directly from a Tia Love (author/editor), Mikita Stevely (author/publisher), and Ticora Davis (creative attorney) on what it takes to polish your work, bring it to market, and protect it along the way.

Session 4: Marketing & Branding (with CM Barnes) | July 11, 2026

Writing the book is one thing… getting people to read it is another.

In this session, you’ll learn how to build your author brand, position your book, and market it with intention so it reaches the right audience. Hear directly from a CM Barnes (published author), Shakeema Bouyer (marketing & branding professional), and bookstore owner on how to increase visibility, connect with readers, and get your book in front of the right spaces.

Learn how to position, promote, and build a brand that gets your book seen.
