The Dixie Cats uphold a tradition as the oldest organized traditional jazz band functioning in the Tucson area. For well over 40 years they played several nights a week at Gus and Andy’s Steak House and the Ye Old Lantern Restaurant, and now continue to perform as headliners at the Phoenix Jazz Society, the Arizona Jazz Society and at many casinos throughout the southwest.
This veteran ensemble (cornet, clarinet, trombone, banjo, drums and bass) emulates the sounds of jazz from the 1920’s and 1930’s with the same instrumentation as that of the early New Orleans jazz groups such as Nick Larocca’s Original Dixieland Jazz Band, the Buddy Bolden Band and the Louis Armstrong Band. Their selection of tunes crosses the most popular list of that time period and is performed in a fun and energetic swing style. The Dixie Cats continue to draw capacity crowds varying from the oldsters down to the young swing-dance devotees.
