About this Event

Thursday, July 20, 7:30 PM

Join us at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla for an evening with Dr. Mark Hargreaves and Hallie Swenson as they discuss The Distinct Modernism of San Diego. When it comes to California Modernism attention is inevitably focused on Palm Springs, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. This means that San Diego is often overlooked.

The Distinct Modernism of San Diego lecture is designed to highlight the contribution of San Diego to the architectural modernism of Southern California. It will begin with a look at the work of Irving J. Gill, whose innovative buildings set the city on a unique architectural trajectory. The lecture will continue with a focus on the characteristics which make the modernism of San Diego distinct.

Dr. Hargreaves is Rector of St James by-the-Sea in La Jolla. He graduated from the University of Oxford with honors and then completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge. His lifelong interest in the visual arts led him to complete a master’s degree at the National Gallery and Kings College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. He is the author of the forthcoming book, The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill.

Hallie Swenson is an architectural designer with a passion for traditional architecture and urbanism. She has a bachelor’s degree in global business management from Point Loma Nazarene University and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Notre Dame. She has studied at King’s College, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Buckingham in London, and has had the privilege of learning from the best architects and urbanists in the UK and United States.

The lecture will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for this event. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first-come; first-served.
