A Devising and Dramaturgy Workshop to kickstart your creative process this July.
About this Event

It's back again due to popular demand! The Devising and Dramaturgy Weekender is full of new inspiration and zest to help you make brilliant work.

  • Spend time considering the impact of your creative choices.
  • Gain practical tools to expand your ideas.
  • Feel empowered and excited about making work again.

Work with director and dramaturg Sarah Fielding to develop and consider your work and practice, and explore new devising techniques.

Why should I do this ?

It's a great opportunity to spend time considering your practice and your work. We will explore different devising techniques and inspirations, and use the open space model to investigate problems within our practice and interrogate our making processes.

Who is this workshop for ?

All makers of performance - including (but not limited to) circus artists, dance artists, and theatre makers.

What happens in the workshop?

A mixture of practical exercises, physical work and theoretical discussion. There will be presentations, feedback, and brainstorming to develop your own project and ideas. The workshop will provide a toolkit to explore new ways of working.

The workshop runs 10-4pm Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd July 2023.

WHO AM I ?

Sarah Fielding is a director, writer and dramaturg who has directed shows at the Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory and The Roundhouse. She is a director of The Invisible Circus and has directed many of their shows, and has worked as an assistant and associate director with Sally Cookson and Tom Morris. She was part of the 2021 Royal Court Writers Group, and has just completed her Masters degree in Text and `Performance at Birkbeck College and RADA. She has run devising workshops at the Roundhouse and Bristol Old Vic and studied at Ecole de Phillippe Gaulier in Paris. She is currently working with Common Wealth Theatre on a new show and is interested in ensemble process, co-creation, deconstructing hierarchy, equity, accessibility and representation, as well as making great work.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

DAY ONE

We will explore different starting points for making work, and important questions to ask. We will explore different ways of creating performance including devising from space, from personal experience, from the body, from objects and from stories we find. We will explore how basic improv principles can help create work, including working with text, and the role of oppositions.

DAY TWO

We will look at different ways of structuring performance from 5 act structure to more experimental structures. We will explore the difference between the performer and the character, and what these different choices offer. We will look at different rehearsal room models and the role of the director, and what an ensemble led process looks like. There will be an open space forum to troubleshoot personal projects and explore what an equitable, accessible creative process looks like.

"It was so enriching and inspiring. The knowledge Sarah imparted was so valuable as a way into creating work. Just being in a room with all the other creatives and talking through different ideas and perspectives was so important for me and my practice. I feel like I've been given access to a whole other part of my creative practice."

"I was constantly inspired and constantly learning throughout the 2 x days."

"I have no negatives, it was well considered, well constructed, great tone and delivery. Full of information and practical uses of tools covered."

"I loved it so much. Thank you! I can't wait to get cracking on getting the ideas to the next phase now."

"I have nothing but praise and positivity, I came away energised and raring to go create. What a great way to spend my weekend, investing in my practice and my work with some great people. I came away with a new set of tools and am excited to use them."
