The Defining Ten is where an artist/creative is invited to take us on a musical dot-to-dot journey of the tracks that led them to who they are today. These could be the first song they have a memory of, first purchase, first song they learnt to play, the track that opened doors, the track that closed doors, a track that inspired and led to a new musical direction – so expect a variety of tracks from themselves and other artists. These tracks will be played in turn – either from vinyl, CD or streamed – and discussed with the artist.
On Thursday 25tth September we bring Edgar Broughton to Worthing to discuss his Defining Ten.
Singer, songwriter and guitarist Edgar Broughton was a founder member of the Edgar Broughton Band, the flag waving agit rockers of the late 60s/early 70s. Originally from Warwick, they released 6 albums across 7 years on the lauded Harvest and NEMS labels, becoming counter culture heroes.
The band played the notorious Worthing music festival Phun City in 1970 and were one of the first proponents of free concerts, playing in a variety of offbeat locations and attracted some controversy as a result of cases of civil disorder occurring at their shows. Their live rendition of The Fugs “Out Demons Out” – recorded at Abbey Road Studios – became a regular set closer and anthem.
The band would split in 1976, but would regroup under the name The Broughtons for several years, before a resurrected Edgar Broughton Band disbanded in 2010, with Edgar continuing his own acclaimed solo career.
Edgar is well known as one of the most strident protest singers, but at times one of the most accessible – with a surprisingly diverse repertoire of self-penned material – delivered in his gritty vocal style, reminiscent of Captain Beefheart and Howling Wolf.
Once described as a proto–punk, his involvement with political activism has continued down the years and many of his songs reflect this. His solo, acoustic performance is an emotive, entertaining tour de force containing both new songs and old favourites.
We’re very excited to bring this hero of the counter culture to Worthing, to play and discuss the 10 songs that have defined his creative career. After the discusion we will be treated to a 40 minute stripped back solo set which will be recorded with a plan to releasing as a limited edition vinyl in the future - a nice keepsake for those attending!

The event takes place at the Cellar Arts Club, Marine Parade (off Prospect Place) in Worthing.
