About this Event

The Deep State v. The Dictator: America's Battle of Nightmares

Date: Tuesday 12th November 2024

Location: Nottingham Contemporary

This public lecture is the second annual event organised by the Centre for Media, Politics and Communication Research which is based at the University of Nottingham.

We are delighted to welcome you back to the iconic Nottingham Contemporary building in the heart of the city.

The speaker is the distinguished and experienced BBC Radio 4 producer, Phil Tinline.

In this fascinating and topical talk perfectly timed for the American presidential elections, he will draw on ideas from his current Radio 4 series, “How Would We Know If Democracy Had Died?”* and his 2022 book, “The Death of Consensus: 100 Years of British Political Nightmares”.

It will explore the polarised nature of American politics and how mutual fears of each side were stoked and sustained by the news media in various guises. The talk will also discuss the implications of this in terms of American democracy – and our own here in the UK. .

The doors will open at 5.30 for a 6pm start. The talk will be around 45 minutes followed by Q&A.

Please join us afterwards for a drinks reception.

Phil is very happy to sign copies of his book if you have one to bring along.

*"How Would We Know If Democracy Had Died", starts on BBC Radio 4 on Mon 14 Oct at 11am - and runs for three weeks.
