The Deep Read: A Conversation with Hernan Diaz

Join us for a public conversation with author Hernan Diaz. He’ll discuss his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Trust with Deep Read Faculty Lead, Associate Professor of Literature Zac Zimmer. We’ll consider how the technologies of finance and fictionoverlap in this novel about capitalism and its social, cultural, and political power in the United States.

Hernan Diaz is the award-winning author of In the Distance, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and Trust, which was longlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize and one of the winners of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Associate Professor Zac Zimmer is an interdisciplinary scholar of literature, culture, and technology in the hemispheric Americas and serves as a faculty lead for this year’s Deep Read.

About the Deep Read

The Deep Read is an annual program of The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz. Now in its fifth year, we invite curious minds to think deeply about books and the most pressing issues of our contemporary moment.

Directions and Parking

All guest parking will take place at the East Remote Parking Lot (Lot 104). There are no parking fees in the East Remote Lot for this event. There is no event parking outside of this lot without additional payment or advanced arrangements. We encourage sustainable transport such as carpooling, biking, or utilizing METRO transit services whenever possible. Please make sure to leave extra time to arrive at the Quarry.

Enter campus through UCSC’s main entrance at the intersection of Bay and High Streets. There will be directional signs directing you to the “Quarry Event.” Guests are encouraged to make time for a 15- 20 walk from the East Remote to the Quarry Amphitheater gates. Shuttle service will be provided. Shuttles will depart from the East Remote Lot interior transit stop.

ADA parking for this event will be located at the Bay Tree Bookstore Parking Lot 102 next to the Quarry Plaza. Each vehicle must display a valid, DMV-issued ADA placard or plate to be able to park in this area.
