About The Deep

Overlooking the Humber Estuary, The Deep is an education and conservation charity with an awe-inspiring aquarium in Hull.

Locally, The Deep is an active participant of Visit Hull & East Yorkshire, Hull Bid and is a Major Partner Member of Future Humber. Further afield, The Deep is an active member of Yorkshire Attractions Group, British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums and World Association of Zoos & Aquariums, promoting its region globally, encouraging visitors to East Yorkshire whilst inspiring positive change for the oceans as its charity’s mission.

Since opening in 2002, The Deep has welcomed over 10 million visitors, with the charity proudly remaining financially independent. Led by a Board of voluntary trustees, The Deep does not receive any financial support from the public purse.

Built at the confluence of the River Hull and the Humber estuary, The Deep spearheaded the regeneration of what was once a derelict part of town. A £52 million development transformed the brownfield site of Sammy’s Point to become The Deep, and saw the construction of the Millennium Bridge across the River Hull. This investment also paved the way for further redevelopment of the Fruit Market and Humber Street area, which has become a vibrant space. Each year, The Deep contributes an economic benefit of £20 million to Hull and the Humber region.

The Deep celebrated its 20th anniversary in March 2022 having survived the pandemic, and continues to cement its place as the most successful Millennium Project in the UK.
