The great bassist, Darrel Mixon, is joined by Eric Slaughter and Kirk Grice to form a dynamic trio that will blow your socks off! Erika Johnson will be on the mic, and she will melt your knees! Eric has been playing jazz guitar in STL for a long time, and nobody is better. He can do anything and everything and with this trio, he's gonna have some fun. Kirk Grice is as well-respected a drummer as a person can find. He will get down with the most serious jazz bands a person could play with and then kick some blues out with a big smile on his face. He's been an OG drummer in town for a long time and nobody is better. He also likes to break out the various percussion instruments that lend an ancient vibe to the room, so look out for that. Erika Johnson has so much soul from her lifetime of music that she is considered an absolute authority on the whole damn thing. She is at the absolute top of the mountain when it comes to soulful jazz vocals that are musically intelligent at the same time that they are soulfully beautiful. These four could play for forty-eight hours straight with the amount of music that they know, so who knows what they will do?! But it's gonna be hot and funky at times, mellow and beautiful at others, deep and spiritual and excellent on every.single.note. If you want to see the masterclass of musicianship, this is a great opportunity.
Darrell Mixon is a founding member of Tracer, a band that has been in existence for over forty years in St. Louis. His father was the great John Mixon, one of the original founding members of the Black Artist Group, or B.A.G. Darrell grew up at his father's side, watching the old man wow the crowds on a near nightly basis. Darrell got his start early, playing on stages with great players as a teenager. The young pup in the group, respected yet jeered and teased a bit, in good fun. "John Mixon's son" earned respect early by working his butt off to get up to speed with the greats he grew up around. And he just never stopped playing and learning. Now he is a grand elder of the scene. A man who has done it all. His improvisation chops are world-class, and if you want him to play the tune straight, that's no problem at all.
When a musician gets to a certain point of excellence, it's just a matter of what they WANT to do. And with these new formations of the "D. Mix Trio" or "Mixon Trio" or "Darrell and the Alligators", he can do what he really wants to do. He can call his trios or quartets or duos whatever he would like. He's gonna call on the best players in town to play some excellent music, you dig?
Come out and support one of the founders of the STL jazz scene as it is today. Give them some of your dough and enjoy the immense talent of these players. You won't regret it one bit!
