The Cynthea Kelley Quintet Plays Esperanza Spalding
About this Event

The Cynthea Kelley Quintet will be performing some of the wide-ranging music of Esperanza Spalding—including her Brazilian-influenced songs (like “I Know You Know”), R&B/funk songs (such as “Radio Song”), and her songs in the vein of complex and funky prog-rock (as “Judas” and other songs from Emily’s D+Evolution).

Check out live recordings of Kelley’s previous Esperanza tribute at Rudy’s Jazz Room here:

Kelley will be joined by Dan Hitchcock (saxophone), Melvin Macias (piano), Leland Nelson (bass), and Madison George (drums), also featuring Liz Kelley (voice/guitar) and Adam Wissman (guitar).

About Cynthea Kelley

Always in pursuit of a deeper understanding of music and craft, Cynthea Kelley is a vocalist and guitarist who constantly pushes the limits of her artistry. Her inspiration comes from a wide range of genres—including jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim, singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn, and classical guitarists Heitor Villa-Lobos and Leo Brouwer. But this influence, though speaking to her development and flexibility as a musician, does not outshine Kelley's sweetly powerful sound that draws the listener into each moment.

In 2018, Kelley earned a BA in Classical Guitar Performance at Coastal Carolina University. She also spent time in the world of jazz and commercial music, performing with and arranging for the CCU Big Band and the CCU Jazz Combo. As a vocalist at Coastal Carolina, Kelley performed alongside artists such as Victor Wooten, Ron Miller, Becca Stevens, Steve Bailey, and Victor Provost.
