The Curtain Club was a legendary venue back in the day with particular significance for the city's LGBQT community. Such was its role that it can be seen now of great importance in terms of the city's social history and cultural heritage.
It opened originally in the mid 1940's as a Gentlemen and Ladies Arts Club but soon gravitated into becoming a rendezvous for the local gay community and there are many colourful accounts of how The Curtain Club evolved over the years until it's eventual demise in the early 1980s.
Many talk of the vibrant atmosphere and cutting edge music to be found there whilst others recall it as a safe haven and a refuge from problems encountered in their daily lives.
There have been fleeting overtures about reviving The Curtain Club but for whatever reason, plans were frustrated. Now, the time is right and for this Revival Night we have engaged the services of the inimitable IAN LEVINE who was the original DJ at London's famous 'Heaven' venue. He remained as the Resident DJ there for a decade throughout the 1980s where he was instrumental in establishing the Hi-NRG genre that so captivated the discotheque audience of that era in gay claubs and well beyond. Ian himself became an established songwriter and record producer eventually selling over 40 million records. These included the gigantic 'High Inergy' by Evelyn Thomas, 'So Many Men, So Little Time' by Miquel Brown and so many more. He then went on to work with so many more including The Pet Shop Boys, Bronski Beat, Erasure, Hazell Dean etc and was the original producer for Take That.
Ian was so excited to hear that The Curtain Club is being revived that he has agreed to play his first Hi-NRG set in 30 years.
The fact that we are able to return to the original site of the Curtain Club is a big, big bonus and big thansks are due to the current management of The Queens Hotel for faciltating this.
We know already that this will be a monster of a night and hope that as many as possible will be able to join us for this historic occasion
