Curious Histories' Summer Special exhibits local history at its most rambunctious, and global history at its most mellifluous.Curious Histories pitches up at Brighton's friendly East Street Tap for its summer special double-bill. Mat Homewood and Jonathan Scott present two surprising stories of human entertainment. All profits from the evening will be going to help the Re-engage charity.
Our talks:
Drunken Edwardians in Lewes
Lewes was once famous for having ‘seven churches, seven breweries, and seventy pubs’. As a consequence, the town saw a high incidence of drunkenness, which reached its height during the Edwardian period. Mat Homewood will regale us with tales of drunken behaviour by both men and women during that time. Hear about ‘The Dark Angel’, the extraordinary conduct of Margaret Kenny, and several daring escape attempts from the town’s Inebriates’ Reformatory.
Into the Groove
Jonathan Scott investigates the eccentric story of recorded sound from the first attempts to reproduce sounds, through the invention of the phonograph, to the rise, fall, and rise again of the vinyl LP record. Expect accounts of maverick experimentation, scientific rivalry, and remarkable ingenuity in the development of the modulated groove.
Our speakers:
Mat Homewood is a specialist genealogist and local historian, with an MPhil from Sussex University on Victorian migration in the county. Not only an accomplished speaker, Mat also produces immaculately researched family trees in traditional pen and ink for his clients.
Jonathan Scott is the author of Into the Groove: The Story of Sound From Tin Foil to Vinyl, the subject of his talk for Curious Histories. He's also a record collector, genealogist and regular contributor to the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine.
