A non-profit photography library based in Taipei that is open to all, Lightbox Photo Library is a community-centric space that remains dedicated to its mission of preserving and promoting photographic practices within Taiwan. Lightbox’s founder and director Liang-Pin Tsao discusses the organisation’s journey since its establishment in 2016, and shares his reflections on Lightbox’s 8-year journey as an independent cultural space for photography.

About Lightbox Photo Library

Founded in 2016, Lightbox Photo Library is a non-profit, open-to-all photography library focused on Taiwan. Before its establishment, Lightbox saw shortcomings in Taiwan’s photography environment: scattered local resources, expensive learning materials, and a lack of community spaces, causing the erosion of photography culture.

Culture needs roots — Lightbox uses the library model to preserve, research, and promote Taiwan's photographic publications, and deepen perspectives originating from Taiwan through various projects.

Lightbox continues to promote community involvement, embodying the principles of cultural co-creation and knowledge sharing. We hope to collaboratively build an open and equitable photography culture unique to Taiwan.
