About this Event
San Diego‒The Crucible play will take place at the High Tech High Mesa Theater on December 9 and December 10 from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. The play is being produced by the students of 10th grade who created their very own theater company, named the “Matt Darling Theater Company,” specifically for the project. The play was written by Arthur Miller in 1953 and this production is being directed by Isamu Thung. The lead roles are John Proctor played by Charlie Lopez, Abigail Williams played by Kelly Semtner, Judge Danforth played Emilio Urzua, and Reverend John Hale played by Katie Buse.
The Crucible is about the Salem Witch Trials in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during 1692-1693. The story is all about people being falsely accused of being witches and studying witchcraft. One of the main characters, Abigail Williams and some of the other girls were caught illegally dancing in the forest, which was the catalyst for all the events to come. If someone was accused of being a witch, they could either plead innocent to being a witch and get hanged, or they could admit to it and get sentenced to J*il for a certain amount of time. For a story written in the 1950s, it’s shocking how relevant it still is to this day. The themes of The Crucible have a lot to do with what we see in today’s world. The biggest comparison to be made is the persecution of the people in The Crucible and the persecution of people today. In fact, Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible to serve as an allegory for McCarthyism, a campaign which took place during the Second Red Scare when the United States government persecuted people who were accused of being communists. It’s clear, at this point, that The Crucible was written to be a connection between its characters and the period of time that Arthur Miller was living in. The Matt Darling Theater Company is trying its hardest to replicate this comparison.
There are many separate teams who are contributing to bringing The Crucible play to life in the school’s theater. There’s a publicity team, a sound team, a lighting team, and an acting team, all of which have important roles that they’re each trying to fulfill. It’s evident that each team is hard at work to bring the best play possible to the High Tech High Mesa and the larger San Diego community.
