About this Event
Intimidated by the cold shop machines? Not sure which machine should be used for what or when? Then this is the class for you. When explored for their own inherent value and integrated into an artist’s menu of glass working techniques, the varied cold working processes can be used to enhance and extend existing pieces to a new level or to create new works in glass. Students will learn how to safely and effectively use the most suitable piece of equipment to achieve their desired results. In this intensive class, starting with clear or multicolored blocks of glass, students will be introduced to a wide selection of coldworking equipment to create small scale objects and sculptures. Students are also encouraged to bring in their own glass objects to work on.
This class is suitable for cold shop beginners and for those with basic knowledge of coldworking.
Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the hot shop, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 12-4pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.
What to Expect: Students can expect to watch a number of demonstrations and have time to practice coldworking on various objects using different techniques. Tools and materials will be provided. The cold shop equipment can be loud, and all equipment is water fed. Students should wear waterproof shoes, an apron, safety glasses, and ear protection are provided.
Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.
While working in the coldshop, working the equipment involves mostly standing, sometimes for long periods. Working glass on the equipment requires a certain amount of dexterity and grip. To learn more about accessibility please refer to the website’s accessibility page.
Eligibility: This class is suitable for cold shop beginners and for those with basic knowledge of coldworking. Open to ages 12 and up.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
