About this Event
Over the past decade, the study of Russia in American academia has faced a profound transformation. Once anchored in Cold War–era paradigms, Russian Studies now confronts new realities shaped by war, disinformation, and deepening political divides. How can scholars pursue rigorous, objective inquiry when the very subject of study is at the center of global controversy?
This discussion brings together Dr. Theodore P. Gerber (University of Wisconsin–Madison), Dr. Dmitry Dubrovskiy (Kennan Institute, Wilson Center) - to reflect on the current and evolving condition of Russian Studies in the United States. The panel will examine how academic institutions, funding priorities, and public discourse have shifted, and what directions the field might take in response to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
Key questions of purpose and responsibility: Why study Russia today? How should the field adapt to a new moral and geopolitical landscape?
The event will be followed by a reception for ASEEES Convention participants — an opportunity to continue the dialogue in an informal setting.
