The Colored Museum is a satirical play by George C. Wolfe that uses a series of 11 "exhibits" or sketches to explore and critique stereotypes and historical narratives surrounding African American identity.
Performed by an ensemble cast, the play uses humor, music, and direct audience address to examine themes like slavery, assimilation, Black motherhood, and the internal conflicts within the community.
The play is structured as a tour through a metaphorical museum of Black culture, with each sketch taking on a specific cultural artifact or stereotype to deconstruct it.
