The Background:
Following the KGB success at Strakhstok, unusual events were observed by the global intelligence community within the Soviet Union following the path of Artifact #73 over the next several years. General Secretary Andropov ordered Artifact #73 to be secured at the headquarters of the Northern Fleet at Severomorsk Naval base. It remained there until May 1984 when a massive munitions fire damaged large parts of the base. In 1985 General Secretary Chernenko ordered the object moved to a top secret research facility in Kazakhstan. The facility and vault were believed to be destroyed in a nuclear test shortly after the Artifact’s arrival.
Given the extreme risk posed by the Artifact, newly-appointed General Secretary Gorbachev ordered the artifact to be secured in Moscow until a research facility with suitable containment could be built, far outside the reach of outside forces and prying eyes. Siberia was selected as an ideal site. Gorbachev had a keen interest in developing Artifact #73 into a power source, rather than a weapon; something seen by party hard liners and members of the GRU as a sign of weakness and totally unacceptable. While the Politburo moved mountains to give Gorbachev his new facility, the Thule Society, with its global network of informants and supporters, never stopped tracking the Artifact’s whereabouts. When the time to transport the artifact to its new facility arrived, their long-awaited plan could be set in motion.
In November of 1986 Spetsnaz General Nikolai Zharkov , collaborating with the Thule Society and fellow anti-Gorbachev hard liners, was put in charge of the convoy that would transport Artifact #73 to its new home in Siberia. General Zharkov proposed that multiple convoys be sent, one carrying the Artifact and the rest as decoys as the CIA would undoubtedly be tracking their movements. What Gorbachev and his supporters could not have known, was that the Siberian convoy was one of the decoys. As a drunken Comrade-Colonel Kulikov followed an empty truck in his staff car, the real convoy was transporting the Artifact to the doorstep of the Thule Society in East Germany.
Zharkov, of course, never intended to honor his deal with the Thule Society. He planned to seize the Artifact and all associated documents once the Society was finished with its weaponization research. Before his plan to topple the Gorbachev regime could come to fruition, international intelligence agencies caught wind of Artifact #73’s detour and mobilized forces to intervene. On a moonless night in December of 1986, as Special Forces closed in on the mountain castle that the Thule Society was using as a base of operations, a bright burst of light illuminated the sky and shattered windows for miles in every direction. As both West and East reeled from what appeared to be a nuclear detonation in the sleepy village of Feldnitz, one thing was clear: all bets were off and the clock was now ticking. As both NATO and the Soviet Union mustered what forces remained in the area, extremely disturbing reports were trickling in from the new Brandenburg Exclusion Zone.
