Bristolian outfit The Cindys united through a shared love of Alex Chilton, The Clean and Beat Happening. Birth child of Jack Ogborne (aka Bingo Fury) and with help from Naima Bock, Finlay Burrows and members of Belishas, the group fronts surrealist imagery and infectious hooks at a pace that’ll give you butterflies. Their debut album was recorded across the west country, between the vault of the Cornish Bank in Falmouth, Rockfield studios in Wales and the cellar of legendary venue The Louisiana in Bristol throughout 2024. The album includes production and engineering contributions from Joe Jones (Aldous Harding, The Cure, Teenage Fanclub) and Sam Stackpool of Holiday Ghosts, who also features on 12 String. The album can be expected on November 7th via Breakfast Records (UK) and Ruination Record Co (US).Like all classic songwriting, The Cindys began as an exercise in simplicity. Jack Ogborne had spent years producing challenging, uncompromising music under the moniker of Bingo Fury, a project that had long attracted praise for its stark poeticism and experimental ambitions. With plaudits from The Guardian, TheQuietus, and CLUNK, not to mention regular support from BBC 6Music, the band had from strength to strength, and by all appearances, Ogborne’s songwriting was only flourishing. However, for Ogborne, these efforts to push the envelope had gradually ceased to be compelling. Returning to his old love of 80s indie, from C86 to Flying Nun, he found himself drawn to the directness, the lucidity of straightforward hooks and melodies. ‘Dry TV’, the second single off The Cindys self-titled mini album, perfectly captures this return to the basics, with Ogborne trying to tap into the ‘sacred feelings of early 20’s angst and heartbreak’. Earnest and cathartic, it's another bold introduction to a project that found its footing through a maelstrom of struggle and work since the early experimentalism of Bingo Fury. As Ogborne states:“Dry TV is a straight down the line coming of age love song. To me, it‘s a list of snapshot moments that led up to a specific place and time. It’s reflective and pining yet also optimistic. The whole thing is washed over with a thick coat of teenage nostalgia. Echoing its influences, all the components of Dry TV were tracked or stemmed to 8-track cassette, with the majority of the track being recorded in the basement of The Cornish Bank in Falmouth. Huddled into thedamp and claustrophobic space with producer Sam Stacpoole, Ogborne sought to recreate the close, collective feel of a band returning to their roots, becoming raw and direct without losing the intricacy of the tracks' arrangements. It quickly became the ‘first real moment they clicked’ and this immediacy can be felt in Dry TV from start to finish, as shimmering, distorted guitars wrap effortlessly around Ogborne and bandmate Naima Bock’s joint vocals.“I feel that Dry TV is a blueprint for the ethos of the Cindys, especially with it being the first song I really remember playing and learning as a band. It carries an earnest, genuine and outward attitude and I think Dry TV is the beginning point for this band. All roads will somehow lead back to Dry TV no matter where the music goes in the future.”
