The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, is one of the finest collegiate choirs in the world – known and loved by millions from its broadcasts, concert tours, and over 100 recordings. Founded in the 1670s, the Choir is renowned for its rich, warm, and distinctive sound, expressive interpretations, and ability to sing in a variety of styles. St John’s College, Cambridge, was founded in 1511 and is one of the largest colleges in the University of Cambridge. Alongside its reputation for excellence, the Choir prides itself on its happy, relaxed, and mutually supportive atmosphere.
Christopher Gray has directed the Choir since April 2023. A graduate of the Royal College of Music and the University of Cambridge, Gray was previously the Director of Music at Truro Cathedral, where he created recordings that garnered critical acclaim, and oversaw the introduction of girl Choristers to the Cathedral’s tradition. Gray follows in the footsteps of eminent St John’s College Directors of Music, including Dr George Guest, Dr Christopher Robinson, Dr David Hill, and Andrew Nethsingha.
