Laura Melnicoff, cellist, makes a return to Crown Heights for this special performance of nigunim with her world-class band of klezmer musicians. Now based in Albany, New York, Laura’s performances have taken her to major stages and festivals in North America, Europe, and Israel, including Carnegie Hall, the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Kyiv Summer Music Evenings, Sababafest, KlezKanada, Yiddish New York, and the Aspen Music Festival. Her work has been profiled in The New York Times, the New York Jewish Week, and the Forward.
Before her recent move to the Capital Region, Laura frequently worked with the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene, and was cello chair of the critically- acclaimed off-Broadway hit Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish directed by Joel Grey.
Laura is a recipient of the 2024 Folk Arts Grant by the New York State Council for the Arts. In 2023, Laura was the recipient of a grant from the Arts Center of the Capital Region, which supported her debut album of solo works for classical cello, “Bars of Light.”
The Charitonow Greatest Hits is a round up of music composed by Avraham, Aharon, and Shalom Charitonow. Laura’s band of world-class klezmer musicians will assemble to make new renditions of these soulful melodies and raucous dance tunes.
This concert is part of a traveling series of performances for the Folk Arts grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, which will bring this backbone of Chabad musical heritage across New York State.
The series will kick off in the home community for these nigunim, right here in Crown Heights.
