About this Event

"You can’t fake being dope." — Dave Chappelle

Join us Friday, November 14th at Starlight on 22nd (2222 S. 22nd St, Charlotte, NC) for The Chappell Show: Hip-Hop at Its Finest, a night celebrating hip-hop in its rawest, most authentic form. It’s going to be a show, y’all—but it ain’t comedy. It’s a night of dope-ass emcees and DJs bringing classic boom-bap, razor-sharp lyricism, and underground energy to the Queen City. $15 gets you in for an unforgettable experience.

Lineup:

Rasheed Chappell

Rasheed Chappell is a respected lyricist and storyteller from Passaic, New Jersey, known for his razor-sharp pen, cinematic wordplay, and unfiltered reflections on life in “Project City.” Influenced by Rakim, Slick Rick, Nas, Redman, and Naughty by Nature, Rasheed carries the DNA of golden-era hip-hop into the modern age with authenticity and class.

His collaborations read like a who’s who of hip-hop excellence — 38 Spesh, Biz Markie, Action Bronson, O.C., De La Soul, Kenny Dope, Raheem DeVaughn, The Beat Miners, Diamond D — and his discography captures the heart of street poetry and soul. Rasheed’s voice is commanding yet introspective, offering truth from lived experience. Widely regarded as one of the leading voices in underground hip-hop today, Rasheed Chappell is proof that real lyricism never fades — it evolves.

DJ Eclipse

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, and now based in New York City, DJ Eclipse is a legendary DJ, tastemaker, label owner, and culture curator. With roots stretching back to 1985, Eclipse’s journey began behind the decks before his move to South Carolina, where he became a force in the local scene and linked with MC Serch of 3rd Bass. That connection opened doors to national tours, production work, and radio influence that would define his career.

A longtime Fat Beats affiliate, Eclipse co-founded Uncle Howie Records with ILL BILL, releasing pivotal projects from Non Phixion, Immortal Technique, and Q-Unique, among others. Through Pay To Winn Management, he represents artists like 3rd Bass, ILL BILL, Non Phixion, La Coka Nostra, and Rasheed Chappell. As host of Rap Is Outta Control on SiriusXM Shade 45, Eclipse continues to spotlight the best in underground hip-hop, preserving its essence while pushing it forward.

Kil Ripkin & Jah Freedom

Representing Coney Island in Brooklyn and now based in Charlotte, NC, Kil Ripkin and Jah Freedom form one of the most distinctive creative duos in modern hip-hop. As members of the RAP Collective and ALUMNY, their partnership is rooted in deep respect for hip-hop culture — blending elements of jazz, soul, reggae, and experimental music into a sound that’s both conscious and boundary-breaking.

Together, they’ve created standout works like “The Blackout”, their acclaimed Self-Medicate series, and a string of singles that merge introspective lyricism with cinematic production. Kil Ripkin, known for his razor-sharp insight and commanding presence, delivers verses that challenge and inspire. Jah Freedom, an acclaimed producer and multi-genre artist, crafts lush, textured beats that blur the line between boom-bap, soul, and the avant-garde. Their chemistry creates a space where message, rhythm, and spirit align — a sound that’s rooted, revolutionary, and real.

Grumpy Hustla

Grumpy Hustla is an unapologetic collective from Charlotte, North Carolina, known for fusing gritty beats with electrifying rhymes and infectious energy. Formed in 2020, the group consists of Khalil Amin, Mike Leone, Thom Brady, and Shawn Capri, each bringing their own voice and vision to the movement.

Their music speaks to underdogs and dreamers alike — anthems for those grinding through struggle with their eyes on greatness. With influences spanning from golden-era hip-hop to modern trap innovators, Grumpy Hustla bridges raw authenticity with undeniable swagger. Their live performances are magnetic, leaving no doubt that Grumpy Hustla isn’t just a group — it’s a movement built on truth, loyalty, and hustle.

Jamal Matters

From Raleigh, North Carolina, Jamal Matters is an emcee’s emcee — a master wordsmith known for razor-sharp bars, vivid storytelling, and sophisticated wordplay. Drawing from the rich legacy of East Coast hip-hop, Jamal crafts cinematic narratives that echo the grit, humor, and intelligence of the ’90s golden era while bringing a modern edge.

Songs like “Take Yo Chain” and “RAPXXPLOITATION” showcase his ability to weave nostalgia and originality into something timeless. His most recent album, Penmanship, earned praise from underground blogs and peers for its lyrical precision and depth. Jamal’s style is equal parts battle-tested and introspective — a reminder that real bars still matter.

Clinch

Born Bobby Shai’Kese Thomas, Clinch is an Atlanta-based artist whose originality and refreshing sound set him apart from the pack. He began recording music at just eight years old, selling hundreds of mixtapes in middle school before making his live debut in 2006 opening for J. Holiday and Zapp & Roger.

In 2011, Clinch appeared on Snoop Dogg’s son Kalvin Love’s Spanky Danky tape, solidifying his place among rising voices of his era. With mellow tones, clever wordplay, and laid-back charisma, he connects deeply with listeners who appreciate smooth yet meaningful artistry. A true sneakerhead and multi-instrumentalist, Clinch’s music resonates with connoisseurs, stoners, and dreamers alike — proof that creativity and authenticity still rule in hip-hop.

After the show, meet the artists and DJs and vibe out to hip-hop music all night long. This isn’t just a concert—it’s a full-on celebration of hip-hop culture, its legacy, and the artists keeping it alive.

Tickets: $15 | Doors: 8:00 PM | Performances begin: 9:00 PM

Come through, experience the bars, beats, and vibes, and celebrate hip-hop at its finest!
