The Changing Nature of European Security Cooperation

This event looks at the way that co-operation amongst a number of European countries is changing. With the Russian attack on Ukraine, a US administration questioning the future of NATO, and growing conflict and tension world-wide, there has been a growing focus on how Europe should look at its own security and defence.

This round-table discussion will be led by the following experts:

• Aleksandra Kozioł, European Security Analyst at the Polish Institute for International Relations, Warsaw;
• Stefan Wolff, Professor of International Security in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, Birmingham University;
• Emile Chabal, Professor of Contemporary History, Edinburgh University.

There will also be participants in the discussion with UK expertise on these topics.

In particular, the round-table will look at the cooperation between Poland, Germany, and France through the “Weimar Triangle”, which has substantially increased its role as a forum for security and defence co-operation since the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022. It will also look at UK security and defence cooperation with those countries.

The round-table will also look more generally at cooperation on Baltic security and defence issues.

This event is being organised in association with the Scottish Council of Global Affairs, a collaboration of Glasgow, St. Andrews, and Edinburgh Universities. It has been made possible by support from the Consulate-General of Poland in Edinburgh, the Consulate-General of Germany in Edinburgh, and the French Institute of Scotland.

This round-table will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 10 May, in the French Institute in central Edinburgh. It will commence at 5.30 pm, and will end at around 6.45 pm.
