The Chamber Express is a purposely short concert that is intended to feel as a break, a sort of classical music pop-up that can refresh, inspire, spark interest or just give our ever overthinking brains some quality content exposure.
This edition consists of 3 compositions.
1. Ciel Étoilé by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (1952-2023), a total shero legend. The composition is a duet for double bass and percussion, it translates to “Starry Sky” which is pretty self explanatory. But what do stars sound like? It was written in 1999. What a time. For her it was fighting to be taken seriously as a woman composer, being part of the then developing spectralism style of composition in France. For others it was the lingering uncertainty of Y2K. Blissful obliviousness to what the Internet is going to do to us. For example instantly being able to find out what a black hole sounds like.
2. Living Room Music by John Cage (1912-1992) who was an American avant-garde composer most famous for his piece 4’33”. Instruments? How about no? Living Room Music is a reminder that music and rhythm are everywhere, inside and around us, so succumb to it, embrace it, hear it, speak it.
3. Quartet for Clarinet, Horn, Cello and Snare Drum by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů(1890-1959). His long list of incredible modern classical works includes this quartet with an unusual cast of instruments. He wrote it while being immersed in Paris of the 1920s, where Stravinsky’s hegemony was changing music history.
Mr. Martinu will never know adding this experimental, yet so tasteful, single snare drum part to this piece would bring a girl so much purpose and joy. This composition sparked the inspiration to create this event.
