How it works:
This is a clothing exchange. To participate, bring gently used CLEAN clothing and accessories. After paying admission, you will give your items to a volunteer who will give you a ticket for the number of items you brought. You may then select the same number of items to take as you brought.
Our restrooms may be used as a dressing room. You may also take clothing home to try on and bring it back the next day if you want to re-exchange it.
This event practices sustainability and community resilience. It is also a fundraiser for Homeplace on Green River. All participants are required to pay the entry fee.
Entry Fee:
$20 for a full weekend pass purchased Friday, September 26th (keep your ticket and use it to return on Saturday and Sunday. You may bring more items the following day or return items you have decided not to keep).
Each single-day ticket is $10 on arrival.
Homeplace Household Level or higher members are half price, and will be able to come Thursday, September 25th from 5:00-7:00 for a Members-Only “Pick of the Litter Event
Golden Tickets
Bring a full bag of items (15 or more) through September before the event and receive a “Golden Ticket”. Your ticket allows you to take as many items as you like instead of one per each item you bring. Allowing for advance drop off lets us organize items in advance for guests. Golden Ticket holders are still required to pay admission, but may take as many items as they want on each visit.

Why a Clothing Exchange?
Have you ever heard the term fast fashion? It refers to the most significant percentage of the textile clothing industry, which produces low-cost, low-quality, rapidly manufactured clothes. Most of these items are made in impoverished nations and sold to consumers in first-world countries. Those consumers typically throw the items out after only a few uses. Fast fashion is… problematic. While it allows many of us to purchase a wide variety of new duds, it is detrimental to the environment, to human rights, and actually to our wallets long term.
Here are just a few disturbing stats:
Of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tonnes end up in landfills. To put things in perspective, this means that the equivalent of a dump truck full of clothes ends up on landfill sites every second.
The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater.
It takes 20,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of cotton.
At least 8% of C02 Emmisions comes from the fashion industry
And that is not to mention the human rights atrocities happening to primarily women and children across the globe as they make up the fast fashion industry workforce.
In a nutshell, fast fashion is detrimental to sustainability, human rights, and local communities.
Our values here at Homeplace focus on celebrating community self-reliance, practicing environmental sustainability, protecting our natural resources, and providing educational opportunities. By having a clothing exchange at Homplace, we hope to:
Educate people about the importance of conscious consumerism
Helping people save some money on clothes!
Help people live more sustainably
Bring people together for a fun, feel-good, community-minded event
Divert at least a ton or two of textiles from the landfills!
We would like to make this event an annual occurrence and add features such as children’s fashion shows, upcycle competitions, sewing demonstrations, crafting classes, and more. Suggestions are welcome.
