DESCRIPTION
Canada shares strong people-to-people ties with Africa. Never have African Canadians and their descendants been so numerous. Over 20 years, the Canadian African Diaspora has more than tripled, from 300,000 in 2000 to 1.3 million in 2021. Those numbers are expected to grow substantially in the coming decades with the continent becoming one of the main sources of immigration to Canada. Yet the Canadian African diaspora continues to be virtually absent from a dialogue to strengthen the Canada-African relationships.
The Africa Study Group (ASG) is organizing a hybrid conference entitled “The Importance and Role of the African Canadian Diaspora in Trade and Foreign Policy” on October 5, 2024. The venue for in-person attendance is Saint Paul University in Ottawa but participation is also possible online.
This conference aims to highlight the importance of the African-Canadian Diaspora in strengthening Canada's trade and foreign policy relations with African countries. It will particularly emphasize how this diaspora can play a legitimate role in this domain.
