Eurasian otters are apex predators in the freshwater ecosystems of the UK. However, as recent as 50 years ago they were all but extinct in England, with remaining populations confined to the southwest of England and the Welsh borders. This talk will be on the biology and ecology of otters, causes of their decline and recovery, with a focus on the recent history of otter population in Calderdale and the creation of the Calderdale Otter Project.
This talk will be presented by Andy Mather, an ecologist whose current role is working to assess and reduce the impacts of renewable energy projects on wildlife populations. He has an interest in most wildlife, although otters are a personal favourite. He also has an interest in Geographic Information System mapping software and how this can be used in local citizen science projects to improve our knowledge of wildlife populations and aid local conservation.
This event is ticketed at £4 for non-members and £2.50 for BUWG members. This goes towards the venue hire and can be paid in person on the night by cash or card. If you are able, please let us know you are coming by contacting our Secretary vie Facebook Messenger or Email ([email protected]). This ensures we do not go over the room’s allotted capacity.
This is a relaxed seated environment with a tea and coffee break half way through and opportunity for questions. Wheelchair access and disabled toilets on site. The library car park free is to use for the event from 7pm onwards, located behind the library off Central Avenue. Additional parking is on the surrounding streets Manor Lane, Alexandra Road, and Kirkgate, free to use from 6pm. Shipley Library is a 3-minute walk from the market square bus stop and an 8-minute walk from the train station.
This event is hosted by Bradford Urban Wildlife Group, for further information please contact us on Facebook Messenger, or email us at [email protected]
