About this Event
Yosi is looking forward to accompanying music to the Cabinet of Dr Caligari, this 1920 silent German Expressionist Classic directed by Robert Wiene and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. Yosi will be playing piano, organ, synths, sax, clarinet, flute and percussion to accompany the film. He will improvise freely to suit the scene, whether it is comedic, tragic, action-packed or dialogue based - telling the story through the music. He is looking forward to giving you a taste of his talent.
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari :
Film Synopsis: At a carnival in Germany, Francis (Friedrich Feher) and his friend Alan (Rudolf Lettinger) encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss). The men see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare (Conrad Veidt), a hypnotized man who the doctor claims can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare then predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy has come true -- making Cesare the prime suspect. However, is Cesare guilty, or is the doctor controlling him?
He performed the Lodger recently at the Brighton Unitarian Church as well as Charlie Chaplin Modern Times at the All Saints Centre in Lewes last November and at the OSO Centre in Barnes to a packed house as well as having been a regular performer at the Classic Cinema Club, the International School of London and Addison Primary School. He has played musical accompaniment on such films as the Artist, The Passion of Joan of Arc, the Arabian Nights, the Man who Laughs, the Voyager, Balloonatic and the Electric House. During lockdown, he streamed musical accompaniment online to films such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis and the comedies of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
More recently, Yosi has accompanied and shown a few silent films at the All Saints Centre, the first being The Temptress, 1926, starring Greta Garbo as well as Metropolis , the Fritz Lang classic. The screening of Nosferatu is the first time that they showed accompanied silent films at the Brighton Unitarian Church on 29th October.
