About this Event

Part of the Africana Arts & Humanities Festival 2026: "We, Too, Sing America: 250 Years of Black Life and Culture"

Join us for an unforgettable evening with The Bryan Carter Sextet, featuring one of the most celebrated musicians of his generation. Leading his generation as the torch bearer of a timeless sound, Carter's sextet explores a vast repertoire from jazz standards to classics from Ray Charles and Burt Bacharach.

With his jazz ensemble, complete with two horns and a vocalist, Carter presents a set of crowd-favorite originals that harken back to those inspirational predecessors.

About Bryan Carter

Bryan Carter is a Grammy and Tony Award-winning drummer, vocalist, composer, arranger, orchestrator, and bandleader. After completing his training at The Juilliard School, Carter has already played with legendary artists including McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Kenny Barron, Michael Feinstein, and Kurt Elling.

In addition to working in the worlds of film, television, and Broadway, Bryan founded "Jazz at Pride," a non-profit organization dedicated to curating performances and educational engagements that feature world-class artists from the LGBTQIA+ community.

Bryan served as the drummer for NBC's "Maya & Marty," the classic television program "Sesame Street," and most recently appeared as a guest with The 8G Band for NBC's "Late Night With Seth Meyers." Additionally, Bryan has written for major awards shows including the 76th Annual Tony Awards and the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

Bryan most recently served as co-orchestrator for Broadway's "Some Like It Hot"—for which he and his co-orchestrator Charlie Rosen made history as the first orchestrators to sweep all three major awards in a single season: 76th Annual Tony Awards for Best Orchestrations, Outer Critics Circle Awards, and the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Orchestrations. Rosen and Carter continued their streak of success at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards, winning the title of Best Musical Theater Album as producers on the recording.

Carter returns to Broadway in 2025 with the highly anticipated stage adaptation of the 6x Academy Award nominee "Good Night and Good Luck," written by and starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Carter will serve as composer, arranger, orchestrator, music director, and co-music supervisor.

As The New York Sun notes: "Carter is the young musician who in the current century is doing the best job of anyone of navigating between the worlds of jazz and musical theater."
