About this Event

The unique black and white markings of a badger makes them easy to identify, but their nocturnal life style ensures they difficult to spot.

Join us for a morning of understanding this elusive animal. We will discover how to identify their habitat and field signs, while learning about their social structures, territory organisation and behavioural characteristics.

Tutor: Rob Hutchinson

Rob has worked in ecological consultancy since 2012 and is the Manager of Surrey Wildlife Trust Ecology Planning Advice Service (EPAS).

He is responsible for ensuring that the department provides high quality technical advice to Local Planning Authorities and the County Council, whilst also providing technical advice to applicants as part of pre-application support. EPAS is a vital component of Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Mission Statement, at a time when biodiversity is under pressure from development, but also at a time when there is the opportunity to promote sustainable development and excellent ecological practice and design across the whole planning industry.

Rob has a particular fascination with the ‘make-up’ and balance of ecosystems, with particular specialisms in reptiles, amphibians, water voles and badgers. Rob believes that conservation should be approached at a landscape-scale, to increase the resilience and abundance of ecological networks and corridors. Rob has found that the more research carried out into badgers, the more interesting the species becomes.

Outside of the office, Rob is either running, thinking about running or watching Leeds Rhinos and York City FC.
