About this Event
Join Us on 21 March – International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
On 21 March, communities across the world mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination — a day that commemorates the 1960 killings of peaceful protesters in South Africa, known as the Sharpeville Massacre. On this day, police opened fire on a peaceful protest, killing 69 people and wounding 180.
In 1966, the United Nations designated 21 March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In South Africa, it is also observed as Human Rights Day.
This year, BRIG & Beyond Racism invites you to mark the day not only in remembrance but also in action.
As Birmingham approaches local elections, this is a pivotal moment. What commitments will those seeking our votes make on racial justice? What does an anti-racist Birmingham look like in housing, education, health, employment, culture, and civic life?
This gathering is about shaping a Community Mandate — not a slogan, not a wish list, but a clear, collective statement of what our communities expect from those who aspire to lead our city.
Birmingham has set an ambition to become a world-leading anti-racist city by 2035. Ambition must be matched by accountability — and accountability begins with community voice.
Whether you’ve been part of BRIG’s journey for years or are just beginning to engage with these questions, your voice matters.
