San Antonio Poet Laureate and People’s Choice Award Winner Andrea Vocab Sanderson teams up with Flamenco Artist Tamara Adira to present The Breathe Series.
The Carver Community Cultural Center presents a screening of the full Breathe Series at the Carver Little Theater.
The Series, powered in conjunction with the Carver Community Cultural Center, addresses events happening in the world and our nation that have affected us personally and deeply. Police brutality, the normalization of white supremacy, the treatment of immigrants, and living in an era of pandemic and quarantine are issues that are occurring on a global level but affect us each of us individually. As we witnessed Black Lives Matter blooming into the Civil Rights Movement of 2020, the truth has been exposed in blinding light: that human rights are not trifles to be politicized; but self-evident, sacred, inalienable.
The project is made up of seven vignettes, one for each letter of the word “BREATHE,” with each vignette exploring a specific subject. Seven is a special number, as in numerology the number seven is also the number of healing.
Andrea Sanderson (poet, singer, hip hop artist) known on stage as 'Vocab' has been a spoken word artist since 2001. She's the co-host of the consecutive award winning 2nd Verse Open Mic. In May of 2020 she was awarded Best Live Entertainment/Band Musician of the Year by the 17th Annual SEA Awards. She has served as a Writer in Community for Gemini Ink since 2009.
Tamara Adira is a flamenco dancer and is artistic director of Arte y Pasión, a company known for pushing the boundaries of flamenco and Spanish dance as well as one of the most contemporary Spanish dance companies in the country. She is a San Antonio Artist Foundation awardee for original theatrical production and original choreography, and has been recognized by Eleanora Magazine as “Texas Top 50 Women to Watch.”
