In May of 2011, Brian Feldman, “Orlando’s favorite performance artist” (Orlando Weekly) was managing his one-night-only Root Beer Tent at the Orlando Fringe Festival when he was asked by Erin Sullivan, the then Editor-in-Chief of Orlando Weekly, if he would be open to doing a project for its annual Best of Orlando® Party that July. He told her he’d think about it.
Fast forward to June of 2026... Brian had just returned home to D.C. after having driven through the night from Orlando, where he’d performed the . Upon his arrival, he received a text from a good friend back in Orlando, bringing to his attention a story on Orlando Shine about Orlando Weekly bringing back its Best of Orlando® Awards Night after a seven-year hiatus. The photo that Orlando Shine chose to use for its story?
It was at that moment Brian first considered remounting the project for its 15th anniversary. He proposed the idea to Jessica Bryce Young, the current Editor-in-Chief of Orlando Weekly, as well as Graham Jarrett, its Publisher. They both said yes, and now he’s returning to Orlando... again. The Boxer is Brian’s interactive performance art tribute to his hometown alt weekly (still going strong after 35 years!); the best people, places, and things in Orlando; and newsprint itself.
Originally presented outside on the sidewalk in front of The Beacham in Downtown Orlando, this time Brian (Best Performance Artist, Washington City Paper Best of D.C.™ 2026) will be inside of the merciful air conditioned comfort of The Plaza Live. Pick up a copy of Orlando Weekly’s Best of Orlando® 2026 issue from him on August 18th. After you’ve seen The Boxer, you’ll never look at a newsbox the same way again.
Oh, and before seeing The Boxer, make sure you’ve cast your ballot in the 2026 Primary Election! As stated on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections website, “Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and as long as you are in line by 7:00 PM, you will be allowed to vote.” (Same deal in Seminole and Osceola counties.) Voters agree, the best accessory for the Best of Orlando® 2026 Awards Night is an “I Voted” sticker!

“The sketch was going good, the ink work finished, when I heard a voice behind me. It was a policeman on a bike... ‘Is he on a timeout?’ It took me a moment to realize he was referring to Brian in the box.”
