The Body Systems: Understanding Herbal Actions For the Hepatic System

Join Clinical Herbalist Cody Smith for an exploration of how herbs support the liver and its vital role in detoxification and metabolism. Cody is a Clinical Herbalist and Spagyrist with a focus on holistic, nature-based care that supports the body’s innate capacity to heal. Drawing from Western herbalism, vitalist principles, and the alchemical tradition of Spagyria, his approach bridges clinical insight with deeper energetic and philosophical understandings of plant medicine. Whether working with individuals or teaching, he aims to share herbalism in a way that is both rooted in tradition and relevant to modern healing.

In this workshop, we’ll look at herbal actions such as cholagogues, alteratives, and bitters and how each influences liver function, bile flow, and systemic vitality. You’ll learn how to identify and combine herbs based on their actions and energetics to support healthy hepatic function in daily life.

This is class no. three in a four-part experiential workshop series exploring how herbal actions support the body’s major systems. You are welcome to attend one, or multiple classes in the series! Each class focuses on a different system digestive, nervous, hepatic, and cardiovascular while introducing the herbal actions most vital to its function and balance.

These are hands-on, sensory classes: participants will taste, smell, and experience a variety of herbs to directly observe how different actions feel in the body. Together we’ll explore how actions like bitters, relaxants, alteratives, and cardiotonics work in synergy to create effective, system-specific formulas.
