About this Event
Join us for a one-night-only performance of “the blooming of something freed from itself” at Loupe Studios in East Williamsburg on February 20th at 8pm.
Directed by vocal improviser, facilitator, and arranger Matt Goldstein, 16 singers from a diverse set of vocal music traditions will come together to perform a half-improvised, half-composed performance of this bold new choral work.
//
“the blooming of something freed from itself” is a written-improvised choral composition by Asher Blank. In the spirit of Terry Riley’s “In C,” this modular nine-movement work opens itself to the intuitive decision-making of the ensemble, offering structure in varying moments of homophony, loops, and song seeds. Using text repurposed from an essay by Tyler Neenan, the piece explores the life and death of ideas, loosely tracing a single ‘thing’ caught up in the never-ending cycles of formation and dissolution that animate our collective consciousness.
Drawing inspiration from Meredith Monk, Bobby McFerrin, Caroline Shaw, and various corners of the vocal music world, “blooming” is another attempt to blur the lines between composition and improvisation, between ‘some-thing’ and ‘no-thing’ — between music of the mind, music of the body, and music of the heart.
