The Black Fish Project is a cross-genre creation by Iranian composer, Keyan Emami, composed for string quartet, clarinet, double bass, percussion, and electronics. It draws inspiration from the iconic Persian children’s story, The Little Black Fish, which tells the story of a little black fish who wants to know what lies on the other side of his pond. While being cautioned and ridiculed for his curiosity, he embarks on a life-changing journey, learning just as much about himself as he does about the world that surrounds him.
The Black Fish loosely follows the trajectory of its own protagonist, the composer, who draws on his broad and often conflicting experiences as an immigrant who left his native land. The music fuses western classical music with jazz and Arabic maqam music, combined with fleeting Persian modal music. All these elements come together to tell the story of the Black Fish through Emami’s unique musical language.
Featuring The Black Fish Ensemble:
- Ton Beau String Quartet, classical string quartet
- Majd Sukkar, maqam and jazz clarinet
- Andrew Downing, classical and jazz double bass
- Louis Pino and Naoko Tsujita, vibraphone and percussion
- Keyan Emami, live electronics
This performance will take place live at the Aga Khan Museum and will be live-streamed to the Museum's Facebook page.
