ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: The murder of Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, is the most infamous unsolved homicide in Los Angeles’ history. The mystery of Beth’s murder began on the morning of Wednesday, January 15, 1947, in a Leimert Park vacant lot. Speculation about the circumstances of her death, and who she was in life, has corrupted the truth. If you believe you know who Beth was, or who killed her, you are wrong. For decades, the myth of the Black Dahlia has overshadowed the truth of Elizabeth Short's life. Join crime expert Joan Renner for an in-depth look at the case. Joan will reveal the truth about Beth, and why post-war Los Angeles was the only place the horrendous crime could have been committed.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Joan Renner is a true crime expert, author, and media commentator. Originally from Chicago, she has lived most of her life in Southern California, where she has pursued her interest in crime since grammar school. She launched her blog, Deranged L.A. Crimes, in December 2012. The blog covers 20th century crimes and scandals.
The L.A. Weekly called her book The First with the Latest: Aggie Underwood, the Los Angeles Herald, and the Sordid Crimes of a City, “A great introduction to some long-forgotten L.A. crimes.” She has appeared in over sixty TV shows and dozens of podcasts, such as City of Angels, City of Death; Deadly Women; The Real Murders of Los Angeles; Buried in the Backyard; and Hollywood & Crime. Joan is a volunteer archivist and historian at the L.A. County Sheriff’s Museum, and she also cyberstalks 20th-century criminals online in her spare time.
