Liam Ferrie will give an illuminating talk on the key role that one corporation played in laying the foundations for Galway to become a modern internationally renowned high tech city. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC or Digital) was the world’s second largest computer company in the world when in 1971 it opened at Mervue its first manufacturing plant outside the USA. Its presence had a significant positive impact on Ireland’s exports as well as in helping to reverse Irish emigration and in transforming Galway city into a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a global reputation for its skilled industrial workforce and scientific technological research sector.
