About Us
The School of Irish Archaeology is proud to introduce their finest product the Big Dig! The replica ‘Viking House’ workshop and excavation is designed around children from 6 – 12 years of age.
This innovative product allows children to explore the Viking world through a simulated and controlled archaeology dig. Children have an opportunity to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist by learning how to excavate the remains of a Viking house. They will have an opportunity to dig for Viking treasures and artefacts dating back over 1000 years and learn about our Viking ancestors through the eyes of real archaeologists!
Bread Making Workshop
Families and children can partake in our educational, informative, hands-on and engaging workshop where they will learn about how bread was integral to the development of human societies. Participants will learn about the history of farming and grains from the Neolithic period to Medieval Times where we saw the large-scale production of food and grains boom in Ireland and within the wider context globally. Alongside our display table of artefacts associated with the production of food we will have two quern / mill stones allowing members of the public to try their hand at grinding grains and making flatbreads by mixing dough and scoring it. We will have a firepit & stove available where we will demonstrate how flatbreads were cooked over an open stove. This workshop is a drop-in activity run throughout the day.
We ensure this educational and one of a kind experience won’t leave your children disappointed. We guarantee it will leave them wanting to know much more about the work of archaeologists and who our ancient ancestors were!
