About this Event
What to do with Louisville’s highways?
A live taping of The Big Dig podcast in collaboration with Louisville Public Media (LPM).
Every American city is divided by crumbling old highways. Every city is trying to figure out what to do with them. Join Ian Coss, host of the Peabody-Award winning podcast The Big Dig, for a live taping about Louisville’s own attempts to solve that puzzle, and undo the harms of the past. The impending closure of I-65 has raised new questions about the city’s whole highway network, and driven new interest in an old idea: removing I-64 to reconnect Louisville with its waterfront.
Coss will be joined on stage by Tyler Allen, former mayoral candidate and longtime organizer of the ‘8664’ campaign, as well as current Louisville Metro Council member Ken Herndon, and Jake Ryan, Managing Editor of the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.
The live taping will be Wednesday, April 15 from 6-8 p.m. in LPM’s Performance Studio. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please register to reserve your space.

The Big Dig from GBH News explores Boston’s controversial effort to bury a downtown highway – once the most expensive public works project in American history – and the lessons that it holds for the ambitious infrastructure ideas of today. The series was named one of the best podcasts of 2023 by the New Yorker and one of the best podcasts of all time by Time Magazine.
The live taping will be released as part of a new season of the podcast called The Highway Teardown tour, in which host Ian Coss visits other American cities struggling with highway challenges of their own. More about the whole tour at wgbh.org/bigdiglive.
